Xiamen joins pilot program for service sector expansion

The State Council recently issued plans to accelerate its comprehensive pilot program for the expansion and opening-up of the service sector. Nine cities including Xiamen have been added to the pilot program. Officials noted that the service sector is deemed an important indicator in measuring the competitiveness of a city. The service sector accounts for more than 60 percent of Xiamen's GDP.

Recently, Computer Science Rankings, a global professional ranking website, released its annual list of the best universities in the field of computer science, ranking Xiamen University 68th.

The rankings grouped research topics into four major area: artificial intelligence, computer systems, computer theory and interdisciplinary areas. Xiamen University ranked 37th in the AI category.

CS Rankings judges computer science institutions based on various conference paper indicators. It considers the number of papers published by universities and research institutions at top academic conferences in the field of computer science.

Local retailers work to bring foreign trade firms to local market

Trade experts noted recently that large retail firms in Xiamen are working with foreign trade firms that plan to redirect into the domestic market a number of high-quality goods that were originally intended for exports. The efforts are part of a push to help foreign trade firms explore the domestic market and tailor the supply chain for domestic sales.

Xiashang Minxing Supermarket this year welcomed more than 50 new partners, of which 28 are well-known foreign trade enterprises. Domestic consumers can use WeChat's Xiashang Daojia mini-app to browse more than 800 products from foreign trade enterprises. Items for sale include Axent sanitary ware, Dabai sanitary, Ogawa massage chairs and Sunny fitness equipment.

Tongan joins rural comprehensive reform pilot program

The Ministry of Finance recently announced that Tongan is one of 25 pilot counties (county-level cities) and districts throughout China to be added to its list of rural comprehensive reform pilot and experimental areas.

Tongan is the first of Xiamen's districts to participate in the pilot program. It is the only newly-added district in Fujian to join the program. Tongan's focus in the pilot program centers on areas such as cross-Strait agricultural cooperation, digital rural construction and innovation in the talent revitalization mechanism. One of the goals of the program is to develop replicable experience for rural revitalization in urban coastal areas.

Xiamen International Cruise Center opens new terminal

The Xiamen International Cruise Center officially debuted on April 15. The first ship to dock at the Xiamen International Cruise Homeport was the Adora Mediterranea, which offloaded 2,250 returning passengers.

Passengers at the new facility can disembark and clear customs in about 10 minutes on average. The new terminal is the only large cruise homeport complex in the country that shares a common area with cross-sea bridges, airplanes, cruise ships and cargo ships.

Xiamen Chill Town Aegean Shopping Mall to debut on May 1

The Xiamen Chill Town Aegean Shopping Mall will officially debut in Xiamen on May 1. The facility was formerly known as Caitang Plaza. Mall officials said that the reopening will offer a relaxing and comfortable living space across five themed areas. The mall's grand openingwill include a series of activities such as exhibitions, open air markets and an album of memories.

Xiamen FTZ launches measures to boost offshore trade

Xiamen Free Trade Zone officials recently announced a suite of policies designed to accelerate the offshore trade industry. The policies are supported by the local branch of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange as well as the local finance, commerce and tax bureaus. Preliminary calculations indicate that the policy will save enterprises up to 40 million yuan annually.

Xiamen became a State Administration of Foreign Exchange pilot city for new forms of offshore international trade in 2021. FTZ officials said that the pilot policy will optimize the tax environment and reduces the transaction costs of enterprises. Official expect the policies to attract more offshore trade entities to gather in Xiamen.

Construction approved for third phase of Xiamen Huandong Romantic Coast

Local authorities recently announced the approval of construction for the third phase of the Huandong Romantic Coast along Xiangan's Xiahoubin coastline. The project runs between the Maxin Bridge to the north and Xiangan Bridge to the south. The 109-million-yuan project will span 3.5 kilometers.

Construction will include coastline protection, ecological restoration and culvert works. Project bidding is scheduled to wrap up next month, with construction to begin in June. The project is slated to open within two years.

Roof sealing wraps up on Xiamen Dianli 110-kV zero-carbon substation

City officials last week announced the completion of roof sealing work on the 110 kilovolt zero-carbon substation at the Cross-Strait Financial Center in Huli. The substation integrates dozens of new green and low-carbon technologies. The substation is slated to open in June and will serve the Cross-Strait Financial Center Area.
